Bryce Coryell and Jeff Barber - Episode 113

Jeff was joined by Bryce Coryell and attorney Jeff Barber. They discuss a lawsuit against Alaska Waste after a garbage truck slammed into (well through) his business in 2016. The garbage company didn't think they were liable. Bryce and his business partner spent a year trying to recover money from Waste Connections. Eventually they hired Anchorage attorney Jeff Barber to sue Alaska Waste. What ensued is an incredible story.

They discuss the role Wellpath plays in managing mental health hospitals in several states, the role they are currently playing at the Alaska Psychiatric Institute, mental health policy in the United States, including how it was handled in the past, how it is handled now, and how good policies can help people suffering from mental health illness.

Jeff was joined by Tim Sullivan, the Director of External Affairs for the Alaska Railroad. They discuss his time growing up in Alaska, the Sullivan family, his time working as a staffer in the Legislature, how he met his wife, his time working as a consultant, how he got hired by the Alaska Railroad, the history of the railroad, current issues facing the railroad, and its future.

Jeff was joined by Alaskan snowboarder Ryan Stassel. Stassel has competed in snowboarding events all over the world, including at the Sochi and Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. They discuss how he got into snowboarding, how he got into competing, how he got on the U.S. Olympic Team, the process the team uses to select its members, his lifestyle as a professional snowboarder, and how he manages to commercial in the middle of it all.

They discuss his time working for Williams in Lithuania, his time working for Xerox in Alaska, how he worked at a local IT company before Jeff did, why he started AES, his time as a commercial fisherman in Bristol Bay, and stories about commercial fishing.

They discuss how Jeff met Cale, and then Paxson, when he ran for State Senate in 2016, how it was working on the campaign, how we call became friends, how the Landmine came about, some of the stories and projects we have worked on together, other interesting topics, and the idea of bear macing Jeff.

Jeff was again joined Mike Gordon, the founder of Chilkoot Charlie's! They discuss his recent autobiography, "Learning the Ropes." In this episode they discuss his time on the Anchorage Assembly in the 1970s, how he was involved in the zoning of Anchorage, another bar he owned in Anchorage that became a gay bar, and how it got burned down, a bar he owned in Fairbanks, issues he had with Koot's during the pipeline boom, and an attempt to run away to Belize.
